'International Woman' Group Exhibition @ Warrington Museum

'International Woman' brings together a stellar roster of more than 15 artists from 10 countries, being the first exhibition in the UK that highlights the cross-over of the Pop Surrealism and Urban fine art movements under one roof. Working in underground art movements these women have forged names for themselves by pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, experimenting with new mediums, ideas and visual concepts. Individually they have enhanced the overall direction of these underground movements, and as a collective they have changed the way women are viewed in urban culture today.

“Smoke Screen”

I like many of Lynch’s films but The Elephant Man, with its themes of social stigma and public ghoulishness, appeals most. The protagonist is both shunned and misunderstood solely because of his appearance. Merrick’s longing for acceptance and desire to be like anyone else, is met by hoots of derision and revolted gasps. But he is, below his misshapen exterior, really just like us; seeking the warmth of companionship.

The Unclouded Mind

Mental asylums may seem a curious, if not to say odd wellspring for creative inspiration. But to me they offer a tender and liberating subject which quietly worms its way through the imagination. My interest in these long abandoned institutions- as neglected by society as their former inhabitants- was awakened by a desire to pass beyond their shadowy facades. A surreptitious visit to the now derelict Sussex county hospital in the village of Hellingly, drew me further into the labyrinthine possibilities for artistic exploration. The silent interiors and vacant corridors are being reclaimed by nesting crows and creeping ivy. Wards which once echoed with chattering and imbalanced minds crumble into ruins. The long departed residents are retreating ghosts who have made the walls their home.

Here are my thoughts behind:

The thylacine (vernacular name ‘Tasmanian Wolf’) was the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. That was until man entered the picture. A combination of aggressive great white hunter culling and the introduction of competitive predators by humans pushed this shy, beautiful and somewhat clumsy creature to the brink of extinction by the early twentieth century. The thylacine was once found on the Australian mainland and New Guinea but by the mid 1930s only one specimen, named Benjamin remained in captivity in Hobart Zoo, Tasmania. Benjamin succumbed to neglect the way the rest of his species had. On September 7^th, 1936 he died after being locked out of his sleeping quarters: an undignified end to this now extinct animal. Although several short film clips have survived and interest in the genus has grown since its demise, no authenticated sightings have been recorded since.

In my piece the thylacine is happily reborn to redress the hideous imbalance precipitated by man’s ignorance. This splendid creature walked the earth for millions of years but its numbers were decimated in little more than a lifetime.

The show helps publicise and raise funds for the Outsiders charity which helps disabled people gain confidence and fine partners. Their cause seems very worthwhile.

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey 1833, Paul Delaroche

When I first encountered Delaroche’s epic work (the dimensions of the original virtually fill one wall of the National Gallery), I was struck by the drama and deathly anticipation of the piece. Lady Jane Grey (1536/7?-1554) has the unfortunate moniker ‘The Nine Days Queen’. She was imprisoned in the Tower of London and beheaded after claims to her succession were undermined by Mary Tudor. The tale behind her decline and rapid fall is typical of the political machinations of the time. But I find her death, at such a tender age amongst so much personal and social turmoil, particularly moving. It is this sadness that drew me to this work.

In my response to Delaroche’s sombre and highly staged painting, the execution has become a chaotic and choreographed set piece. There are hints of a film set and the female participants are curiously objectified. The world they find themselves in, where hope and fear are irrelevant, is sickly sweet and unremitting.

My inspiration for this piece started from the magical Tudor style houses seen in

Britain

The texture of old oak timbers, warped with age and the bulging walls of these buildings are to my foreign eye, the quintessence of ‘Englishness’.

I also find the monochrome contrast of black wood and white plaster visually powerful. These elements I have incorporated in this painting. The sombre interior is given relief from the rear window light. The main figure is engaged in a very British ritual (tea time). She is chastened by her doll who holds the key to her liberation. Although trapped inside her darkened room, her dream reality permits her to enjoy the exterior freedom of her doll’s house.
